Blog Tour: Can't Escape Love by Alyssa Cole (Excerpt, Teaser)

Alyssa Cole delivers another fun, sexy romance novella in the Reluctant Royals series!
Regina Hobbs is nerdy by nature, businesswoman by nurture. She's finally taking her pop culture-centered media enterprise, Girls with Glasses, to the next level, but the stress is forcing her to face a familiar supervillain: insomnia. The only thing that helps her sleep when things get this bad is the deep, soothing voice of puzzle-obsessed live streamer Gustave Nguyen. The problem? His archive has been deleted.
Gus has been tasked with creating an escape room themed around a romance anime…except he knows nothing about romance or anime. Then mega-nerd and anime expert Reggie comes calling, and they make a trade: his voice for her knowledge. But when their online friendship has IRL chemistry, will they be able to escape love?

Blog Tour: Advice From a Jilted Bride by Piper Rayne (Review, Teaser)

What’s a girl to do after being ditched at the altar by text message? That’s right. Text. Message. How does she pick up the pieces and move on? I’m no Dear Abby but here’s a little free advice…
Advice #1 – First, purge your apartment of all things him—by tossing his belongings off the balcony.
Advice #2 – Do not, I repeat do not, throw anything out into the hallway because you’ll injure your hot new neighbor.
Advice #3 – When said neighbor brings over Chinese Food do not let him stay and keep you company. It’s awkward when you realize he’s your boss.
Advice #4 – Accept his offer to help you with your side business but think twice before using a date to his sister’s wedding as collateral.
Advice #5 – Investigate who your mystery neighbor really is. Don’t trust his word even if he’s the world’s best kisser.
If you listen to nothing else, pay attention to that last one. It’s the most important and will save you a lot of heartache.
 Xo, LOVESICK IN LAKE STARLIGHT

Blitz: Runed by Kendall Grey

ALL’S FAIR IN REINCARNATION AND WAR.
You’ve heard the stories of Norse gods. Thor. Odin. Ragnarok. I’m here to tell you they’re all true. I know because I was there.
My name is Loki.
A thousand years ago, give or take a century or two, I walked the Nine Realms with my brothers, spreading mischief and leaving behind a trail of broken hearts wherever I roamed. I built an unforgettable brand as the trickster god, the father of the Midgard Serpent, Fenrir the wolf, and even Hel herself. In my exploits, I may have accidentally on purpose triggered a bit of unpleasantness that led to the end of the world, but apparently, it wasn’t the end of me. Recently, the shield of ice that froze me in an arctic cage melted (thanks, global warming), and I clawed my way to the surface of a new world.
With a fresh lease on life and a rocking-hot body, I just need one thing: the rune that grants me immortality.
Oh, and a bra would be nice. These boobs really know how to get in the way of a good hustle.

Book Review: The Princess of Baker Street by Mia Kerick

The Princess of Baker Street

Author: Mia Kerick
Publisher: Harmony Ink Press (January 22, 2019)
eBook, 180 pages
Goodreads     |     Amazon

Summary
When she was a child, Joey Kinkaid, assigned as a boy at birth—wearing Mom’s purple sundress and an imaginary crown—ruled the Baker Street neighborhood with a flair and imagination that kept the other kids captivated. Day after day, she led them on fantastic after-school adventures, but those innocent childhood days are over, and the magic is gone. The princess is alone.

Even Eric Sinclair, the Prince Eric to Joey’s Princess Ariel, has turned his back on his former friend, watching in silence as Joey is tormented at school. Eric isn’t proud of it, but their enchanted youth is over, and they’ve been thrust into a dog-eat-dog world where those who conform survive and those who don’t… well, they don’t. Eric has enough to deal with at home, where his mother has abandoned him to live in isolation and poverty.

But Eric can’t stay on the sidelines forever. When Joey finally accepts her female gender and comes to school wearing lip gloss, leggings, and a silky pink scarf, the bullies readily take the opportunity she hands them, driving Joey to attempt suicide and leaving Eric at a crossroads—one that will influence both their lives in not just the present, but the future.

Is there a chance the two teens can be friends again, and maybe even more?

Rating: 4 stars
Review
This book was really difficult to get into because it's told from the POV of Eric, an 8th grader who isn't the "sharpest tool in the shed," as his mom tells him. As such, it reads the way an 8th grader might speak, so the grammar is not great which at times made this book paaaaaainfullllll. Maybe if I was still in 8th grade (and not 33 years old...) I'd have found it less painful. I'm really glad I stuck with it though, because this book has several great messages and a really great story, and I found myself rooting for both Eric and Joey so hard.

The Princess of Baker Street should be required reading for middle schoolers. I want to sit every middle school kid down and have them read this and Jerry Spinelli's Stargirl, and then cry and hope that someday kids will be able to go through their preteens and early teens and not tear each other apart for being different. (Hey, I bet you can guess whether I was bullied really badly in middle school...) I love the message of hope in the second half of this book, and that everything isn't magically fixed but that it does get better for everyone, and that as these kids grow up they're able to become stronger and more sure in themselves and their identities, and to band together and stick up for each other and be their real and true selves.

An ARC of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley for review.

Project Re-shelf Yourself - Kissing Books

So I'm still plugging away on Project Re-Shelf Yourself, where I'm trying to organize the utter chaos that is my bookcases. I've got Annie and Ari coming to help me on Sunday, March 24th to help, and I really need to figure out how I want everything organized by then!

You can see what I'm working with in this post: Project Re-Shelf Yourself - Show Me Your #Shelfie
We also talked about methods of organization and unhauling books back in January.

Today I want to talk about organizing romance - specifically, do you organize your romance into subgenres? I think romance is by far and away what I've got the most of on my TBR shelves. I tend to hang on to less of these when I'm finished reading them than I do for sci-fi/fantasy though - maybe because I don't do rereads of romance as often because there are SO MANY NEW ONES, ALL THE TIME? In unhauling I am trying to keep just the romances I really loved and know I will want to reread or rec to people (by physically flinging the book at their heads...)

Still, I have a LOT of romances in my TBR. Like, we're talking hundreds. x.X (It's not hoarding if it's books!) Right now I'm kind of thinking of separating them into subgenres and then shelving by author, but which subgenres?! Historical vs Contemporary is an easy one, but what about paranormal romances? Or fantasy romance? I have a lot fewer of these two subgenres, and since they both have an element of the fantastic do I just lump them together? Or put the paranormal romances with the other contemporaries, because they're sort of contemporary romance with a twist?

I can't be the only one that organizes my books by genre... How else might I sort these? I want to make it easy to find something to read when I go browse my shelves. (Well, as easy as possible when there are hundreds of books...)

Do you organize your books by genre? What about subgenres? Or is there a better way? Teach me your ways! (Bonus points if it's romance!)

Adaline Frost’s life officially sucks. Now that her BFF has found her true love, Addy is constantly stuck being the third wheel. On top of that, she hasn’t started her junior project yet, so her advisor pairs her up with what could only be described as the “Reject Breakfast Club.” Instead of the weirdo and the troublemaker, Addy is forced to work with two stoners, a popular girl, and her crush, Austin Reed, the jock who broke her heart.
Austin Reed is sick of being labeled “dumb jock.” If he doesn’t get an A on this project, he can kiss his future goodbye. Austin thought he’d gotten lucky being partners with the very nerdy Adaline Frost, but boy was he wrong. Addy jumps down his throat about his being late and calls him names like “manwhore” on the daily. She has no idea Austin works before and after school in order to help his mom with the bills. Yeah, he’s made mistakes and has had lots of girlfriends, but he doesn’t need Adaline Frost to remind him of it every time he sees her.
Can Austin and Addy ever be a thing?

Discussion: Highly Anticipated Books - Nerds, Nerds, Nerds

Today I'm going to tell you about some of the books I'm waiting for an I am SO SUPER EXCITED FOR. There are a LOT of them, so I've narrowed it down to the ones about nerds, LOL. That's right, you heard me - these are the books with the nerdy MCs.

Can't Escape Love by Alyssa Cole
March 19, 2019
Avon

-
Nerdy girls, nerdy girls! *leads cheerleading team* I love seeing some nerd-girl rep in romance! Also, I love that this cover has actual POC cover models. I've noticed a definite trend toward illustrated covers, and it seems like it's especially in books about POC characters, and while many of them are REALLY amazing, I think representation matters. This cover is gorgeous, and I'm so happy Avon and Alyssa and everyone involved decided to use real and fabulous cover models and not go the illustrated route on this one. ALSO; every book in this series has somehow managed to be even better than the last, which should be impossible because I'm pretty sure I'm been rating them 5 stars since book 2. As this is the 5th book (including novellas, officially book 3.5), if it continues on-trend I'm pretty sure the awesomeness is going to make my head explode.

Play It Again by Aidan Wayne

Carina Press

The videos are fun.

But it’s the host who has him coming back for more…

When Seattle-based blind YouTuber Dovid Rosenstein finds Sam Doyle’s Let’s Play channel, playitagainsam, he’s instantly captivated by the Irish gamer. Everything about Sam is adorable, from his accent to his personality, and Dovid can’t get enough of his content.

Dovid’s glowing shout-out on Don’t Look Now, his own successful channel, sends Sam’s subscriber numbers skyrocketing overnight. He has more comments than he can read. And while the sudden surge in popularity is anxiety inducing, Sam decides it’s only right to dedicate his next episode to Dovid…which soon leads to a heart-pounding exchange of DMs.

They may have never met in person, but Dovid’s never felt this close to anyone before. What they have feels worth exploring—no matter the distance. But is it possible to already be in love with someone who’s half a world away?

-
Ahh! Even the blurb has me clutching my cheeks like an anime character and emitting a high-pitched squee noise. I'm pretty sure there are even little cartoon hearts popping out above my head. I love an online romance, and this sounds so cuuuute. And hooray for having a blind MC, because the world needs more diverse main characters! Can't wait to read this one. *so many little puffy hearts popping*

The Right Swipe by Alisha Rai
July 2, 2019
Avon

Alisha Rai returns with the first book in her sizzling new Modern Love series, in which two rival dating app creators find themselves at odds in the boardroom but in sync in the bedroom.

Rhiannon Hunter may have revolutionized romance in the digital world, but in real life she only swipes right on her career—and the occasional hookup. The cynical dating app creator controls her love life with a few key rules:

- Nude pics are by invitation only

- If someone stands you up, block them with extreme prejudice

- Protect your heart

Only there aren't any rules to govern her attraction to her newest match, former pro-football player Samson Lima. The sexy and seemingly sweet hunk woos her one magical night... and disappears.

Rhi thought she'd buried her hurt over Samson ghosting her, until he suddenly surfaces months later, still big, still beautiful—and in league with a business rival. He says he won't fumble their second chance, but she's wary. A temporary physical partnership is one thing, but a merger of hearts? Surely that’s too high a risk…

-
Ooh boy! This book has it all! A lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers vibe, high-powered nerds - actually I can't tell from the blurb if he's actually a nerd or not.... It says "two rival dating app creators" and later says he's a former pro-football player and is "in league with a business rival." I sure hope he's a sports nerd, because the world needs more multi-faceted hot guys. Anyway, it's got a nerd-girl heroine at least, and that's a definite plus. I've read other books by Alisha Rai and loved them, and I'm interested to see if this change in cover style reflects any change in writing style.
What new and upcoming books are you most excited about? Tell me in the comments. Bonus points if they have a nerdy main character!

Excerpt
The smart and rational side of my brain seems to be on a break because all I’m capable of doing is raking my eyes over Mr. Basketball Shorts. He’s tall with broad shoulders and the most pronounced abs I’ve ever seen up close. The baseball cap on his head is turned backward, and he’s currently wiping his face off with what I assume to be his shirt. That is the only reason he hasn’t seen me yet, and why I haven’t seen his face yet either. But I’m going out on a limb here and say it’s probably as gorgeous as the rest of him.

My eyes drift back to his drool-worthy chest, following the beads of sweat that are slowly running down his torso to the V-shaped lower abs until they disappear into the pair of shorts that sits low on his hips.

Sudden heat shoots through my body, making my cheeks tingle from the force of it. My brain uses that moment of distraction to finally kick back in again, reminding me of the situation at hand.

A total stranger is standing in my kitchen.

Half-naked.

And we’re all alone in this house.

Books not on my Feb TBR that I ended up reading:
(and if you're wondering why those add up to 13 read books and not 12, it's because I actually ended up reading Cocky Roommate on Jan 31st, haha.)

I also had another two books I ended up DNFing that weren't on my original TBR, and I've got another two I'm currently reading (Ash Princess and Spinning Silver). Laying it out like this, I didn't have a very high success rate of sticking to my TBR for the month. It was also the first time I'd tried to set myself a TBR for the month, so with that in mind I didn't do TOO badly? I'm counting the DNF one as completed and the currently reading one as not, so that's about a 59% success rate. I'm going to aim for 75% compliance with my March TBR!
