Review
First of all - UGH, first person present tense. WHY? Thankfully, Serena Bell makes it work for her for the most part. This book is very reminiscent of When Harry Met Sally with the whole premise of "Can men and women just be friends?" Head Over Heels is fun and lighthearted, but at the same time it absolutely made me cry towards the end because Bell really made me care about the characters.

Chase and Liv are total opposites - Liv is high maintenance and into interior decor, and Chase is happiest going for an extended camping trip during which he doesn't bother to shower. They meet on a blind date and instantly know that a romantic relationship would never work out for them, but somehow they end up becoming best friends, and that's all they'll ever be... or is it?

Chase and Liv both have dark things in their past that effect the adults they've become, and that hold them back and trap them. This is a really fun friends to lovers, opposites attract romance, but it also is a book about how Chase and Liv deal with their childhood trauma. They both have struggles they need to overcome and I love that there is so much character development for both of them throughout the book. Also, Chase's daughter Katie is the most adorable thing in the world and I want to hug her and squeeze her and play Princesses and Fairies with her and squeeze her little cheeks. While there are plenty of serious issues being dealt with, there is also a LOT of fun to be had, and the back and forth between Liv and Chase is so great.

I'm not usually a big fan of stories with single moms/single dads/kids, but I'm glad I gave Head Over Heels a read. I definitely recommend it for anyone who loves a good friends to lovers romance.

Review: It's never a good sign when you're checking how many pages are left until the book is over... Part of the plot is Colin trying to make Melissa "Bernie" Bernard relatable to the audience of Glaze, the women's magazine he writes for, which is ironic because I didn't find her relatable in the least. Actually, all of the characters were very flat, like cardboard cutouts of people. This also read as really dry and just was NOT for me.

I DID like that it was about a librarian, even though Bernie was not likable at all. Colin's sister and Pia were by far the most interesting characters in this book, though. Now THAT love story I would totally read... I will give the next book in the series a try to see if I'll keep reading the rest of them.

I've loved everything I've read thus far by Cat Sebastian, and this Regency romance is no exception to that rule. Women disguised as men is my catnip, but I was a tad hesitant to tag this in that category. I tagged it GLBTQIA+ because as far as I have words to describe people Pembroke strikes me as being bi and Charity/Robin as, at best guess, nonbinary (rather than a woman disguised as a man). I love seeing romances with diverse main characters, whether that diversity has to do with race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, language, culture, religion, mental and physical ability... So hooray for diversity in romance!

Unmasked by the Marquess had a lot of the plot points I love about mistaken identity and women disguised as men romances: the necessity of misrepresenting oneself to a certain degree to someone else, building a relationship with that person, the turmoil over how and when to reveal the truth, and the fallout that necessarily ensues; awkward/funny bits when someone assumes something about the person because of their apparent gender; and especially in this novel the struggle to discover who you really are once concepts of gender norms are tipped on their heads (or dumped out the window all together). I love the personal growth and awakening Pembroke goes through throughout the course of the book. At one point he says Robin is like the coming of spring when he didn't even realize it was winter, and he truly does blossom like a flower in spring. If she's a robin, he's a tulip - one of the purple ones so dark they look almost black until the sun hits them just right, and then they look like deep-hued jewels.

Robin is also a great character, filled with strength and conviction and determined to do what is right as she determines it by her own unique moral compass as best she can. She struggles so hard to find out who she really is, down to not even truly having her own name, and then tries so hard to be true to herself while still being strong for those she loves. The chemistry between Robin and Pembroke is amazing, and I love the way their relationship develops and blooms along with the apt spring metaphors. I also love love LOVE Pembroke's description of her laugh as being like a pop of champagne. I can almost hear it, and I want to hang out with them, as well as with Amelia (whom I very much hope to see more of in future books in this series) at one of Mrs. Allenby's salons. And isn't that the hallmark of a great book? One that makes you wish you were a part of the story so you can be friends with all the characters you love.

Review: This is a cute romance about two totally opposite (or are they?) guys who are both stuck in an airport in New York City waiting for their delayed flight. Everyone is pretty dang crabby to be stuck there, as you can imagine, and hilarity ensues. I love the opposites attract element to this story (with a dash of enemies to lovers), while at the same time James and Mika aren't opposites so much as two differently shaped puzzle pieces that fit together. (I definitely think James is an edge piece...) Their bumps and misunderstandings feel authentic, and while this definitely has a big dollop of insta-love to it, having both characters acknowledge how bizarre and crazy their immediate attraction is helps me be a little more ok with that. I love that Mika brings out the sass and strength in James, and in turn James helps ground Mika. They're just so great together.

This was a really quick read, I'm not sure if that's because it's actually short or if it's just because I refused to put it down until I'd read the whole thing.

Review: GAH! Takane and Hana are so cute! I had a stupid, silly grin on my face the whole time I was reading this. I love their back and forth banter. It's kind of weird that she's 16 and he's 26, but they acknowledge the age (and life experience) gap at several points and they think it's weird too, so oddly that makes me kind of OK with it? I can't wait to read the other volumes in this series.

My Review

This is the second in the series, and you really should probably read the first book, The Truth About Love and Dukes, before reading this one. You can likely get away with not reading it if you really don't wish to, but it will explain Clara's relationship with her sisters in law as well as her family's history in relation to the ton.

I love that Clara is shy and that she's not classically beautiful, but that when Rex sees her smile that first time it just slays him. I saw the plot set up coming when she's sitting there trying to figure out how to advise these letters to Lady Truelove about how to get noticed by someone, when she has the same problem, and then overhears this suave rake giving his friend lady advice. Still, the way they got there was interesting. And I love that Rex is really such a gentleman, despite being labeled a rake. His mother sure is something else, though!

This is a fun, light read. I love the banter between Clara and Rex, and love the way he helps her, as she puts it, bloom. His advice to the shy is to laugh at yourself, let yourself be vulnerable and go ahead and admit to people that you're rather shy. Basically try to put others at ease around you and make them feel good about themselves, and everyone will love you. Clara doesn't magically transform into a beautiful swan to become the bell of the ball. Instead she works hard to overcome her shyness and gradually grows her own confidence, both in the ton as well as the rest of her life. They both have some great personal growth, but Clara especially. I also appreciate that Ms. Guhrke lets Clara's desire be to be a wife and mother - and that's OK, that's part of feminism too!

The only bit I didn't like was the scene at the wedding. I feel like Rex could have handled that better, and it just fell rather flat for the big scene it was supposed to be. It irked be enough that I knocked a full star off my rating. The ending matters, it can't just... fizzle.
