Blog Tour: Hot Winter Nights by Jill Shalvis

Who needs mistletoe?
Most people wouldn’t think of a bad Santa case as the perfect Christmas gift. Then again, Molly Malone, office manager at Hunt Investigations, isn’t most people, and she could really use a distraction from the fantasies she’s been having since spending the night with her very secret crush, Lucas Knight. Nothing happened, not that Lucas knows that—but Molly just wants to enjoy being a little naughty for once . . .
Whiskey and pain meds for almost-healed bullet wounds don’t mix. Lucas needs to remember that next time he’s shot on the job, which may be sooner rather than later if Molly’s brother, Joe, finds out about them. Lucas can’t believe he’s drawing a blank on his (supposedly) passionate tryst with Molly, who’s the hottest, smartest, strongest woman he’s ever known. Strong enough to kick his butt if she discovers he’s been assigned to babysit her on her first case. And hot enough to melt his cold heart this Christmas.

Blog Tour: Too Wilde to Wed by Eloisa James (Teaser, Excerpt, Review, Giveaway)

No one is more surprised than Lord North when he returns from war to find his ex-fiancee in his ancestral home…working as a governess in a sexy, fiery new Wildes of Lindow Castle romance by New York Times bestselling author Eloisa James…
The handsome, rakish heir to a dukedom, Lord Roland Northbridge Wilde—known to his friends as North—left England two years ago, after being jilted by Miss Diana Belgrave. He returns from war to find that he’s notorious: polite society has ruled him “too wild to wed.”
Diana never meant to tarnish North’s reputation, or his heart, but in her rush to save a helpless child, there was no time to consider the consequences of working as a governess in Lindow Castle. Now everyone has drawn the worst conclusions about the child’s father, and Diana is left with bittersweet regret.
When North makes it clear that he still wants her for his own, scandal or no, Diana has to fight to keep from losing her heart to the man whom she still has no intention of marrying.
Yet North is returning a hardened warrior—and this is one battle he’s determined to win.
He wants Diana, and he’ll risk everything to call her his own.

Excerpt

She giggled, and her arms wound around his neck. “I don’t want to hurt your feelings, but I am relishing my freedom.”

“I know you don’t love me,” he said, keeping his voice even. “Just so you know, I do love you. I think it is a lifelong condition.”

Her eyes filled with remorse, but he shook his head. “Love should never be regretted. But what might be regretted by you is this evening, Diana. You wish to marry for love. Won’t the man you choose expect you to come to him without knowledge of men?”

Never mind the fact that he had every intention of being the man she chose. Look what happened to Godfrey’s father. What happened to the men in his regiment. Life should never be taken for granted.

“Whoever marries me will already know that I jilted a ravishing future duke,” she said firmly, and then, with a twinkle, “You can take ‘ravishing’ in two ways.”

Who would have guessed that his melancholy fiancée could have such a naughty grin?

“My husband will love me enough not to care,” Diana said, her eyes shining with faith.

Everything in North chilled at the idea of Diana being loved by another man. Loving another man. He cleared his throat, because he had the feeling she wouldn’t approve of her romantic ambitions making him homicidal.

“Miss Belgrave, are you giving me permission to ravish you?”

She dimpled at him. “Yes! I requested just that, Lord Roland.”

A gentleman wouldn’t agree. But that perfect gentleman likely wasn’t as focused on winning as North was. Sometimes winning involved breaking some rules. Taking risks. Thinking creatively.

Diana kept stealing glances at his lips.

“A gentleman never refuses a lady,” he said, making up his mind. He rose onto his knees, pulled off his shirt, and threw it over the side of the bed.

Review

I loved Diana and North. They've got a bit of the star-crossed lovers things going on, and I'm not sure if I want to call this friends to lovers or not... It kind of defies my set categories, haha. Too Wilde to Wed is a historical romance set in Georgian era England, which I don't normally like as much as I love Regency romances (I'm just not into all the lace and patches and powdered wigs... *shudder*) but for whatever reason I like this period when Eloisa writes it. It helps that it's set mostly in a country manor, so there isn't as much call for all the rigmarole that would be involved were it to take place in London during the Season.

North is by far and away my favorite character of this novel. I love his quiet strength and determination, and how much he loves his family. The entire Wilde clan is just lovely, and I definitely need to go back and read the first book in the series (which apparently involves a pet skunk!) Diana is also a wonderful character that I felt was somewhat relatable in that she is a fish out of water, and is searching for who she is and where she belongs. I do wish more of the story had focused on Diana's self-discovery and development, as she felt a little wishy-washy to me and not as fully fleshed out as I wish she would have been. Then again, she's a young woman who has always been pampered and taken care of who is suddenly cast out on her own with no real life skills, so maybe that makes sense for her characters.

Several of the side characters are really enjoyable, especially Aunt Knowe (whom I totally want to be when I grow up) and Prism, as well as Godfrey and Artie (whom I expect to have their own story later in the series, because that's how Eloisa rolls).

I LOVE the way the story unfolds, and the way North and Diana's relationship grows and flourishes once they're both allowed to be themselves, rather than a couple of dressed up society puppets. My heart broke for North (several times) but I can't really go into why without spoiling it for you, so I will just say that there were a few spots that had me tearing up and my heart physically aching for North, especially as he comes to some difficult realizations about love and what it means to truly love someone more than your own desires and needs.

This is the second book in the series The Wildes of Lindow Castle, and while it can be read as a stand alone, there's something to be gained from reading the first book, Wilde in Love . I read Too Wilde to Wed first and there are some spoilers for the first book, as well as a fair amount of lead up to what I suppose will be the third book. Like Eloisa's Desperate Duchesses series, this one might be best read in order to get the full experience. That being said, I did read this one as a stand alone and got along perfectly well without having read the first book, so it CAN be read as a stand alone. There is also some lead up to Lavinia and Parth's story, which is the next in the series and I can NOT wait to read it! (Too bad I was rejected for the ARC. *pout*)

Blog Tour: Stripped by Tara Wyatt (teaser, excerpt, review)

The first in a sexy new series from Tara Wyatt!
Detective Sawyer Matthews isn’t just having a bad day—he’s having the worst day. His hunt for the criminal who killed his team member has stalled and now… he’s got to play nice with his new, totally unwanted partner. It’s not that she isn’t qualified, or that he doesn’t like her—it’s because he knows what she looks like naked. So very, very naked.
Brooke Simmons finally landed her dream job working for H.E.A.T, an elite undercover detective squad, and she’s not giving up simply because she had a one-night-stand with her sullen—but undeniably sexy—new partner. They’ll just have to keep it professional. Easier said than done, considering their first case requires Sawyer to infiltrate a drug cartel operating out of a male strip show. Watching him do his best Magic Mike impression every night isn’t just hot—it’s torture.
Sawyer doesn’t need any distractions, yet his attraction to Brooke is explosive and he can’t resist going for round two. Or three. Or four. But as their investigation progresses and danger mounts, they’ll have to put their jobs, hearts, and lives on the line to fight… for each other, for survival, and for justice.

Review

Tara Wyatt's writing style is great. The story and characters are all so engaging, and I found myself totally sucked in. I would totally want to hang out at The Speakeasy with Sawyer, Brooke, Jack and Amelia - and recently, wanting to be friends with the main characters has sort of become my litmus test for a great romance novel, haha.

Sawyer is dealing with the death of his partner, Ryan, and certainly doesn't want a new partner - especially the bombshell he had a one-night stand with! Especially since there's a department policy against fraternization with one's partner... The sparks sure fly in this one! There's an almost enemies to lovers vibe as they both try to resist their attraction, but a bit of a friends to lover vibe as well, and ahhh, I can't even. Why do I even try to write reviews? Just go read it. This one's a keeper, OK?

The best characters are fully-fleshed out, with wonderful qualities, failings, quirks... Wyatt really delivers on that with Sawyer and Brooke, and even with their partners Jack and Amelia (who are side characters, but I assume are the leads in the next two books in the series). We don't get much of Sawyer's brothers either, but from what we do get I'd really like to read their books as well, please. (Are you listening, Ms. Wyatt?)

In addition to an excellent romantic storyline and heaps of sexual tension (and really meltingly hot sex scenes, don't forget those!) there is also the cop/detective aspect of this book. Sawyer goes undercover as a male stripper to infiltrate a drug ring that possibly involves the biker gang and/or cartel that murdered his partner, so there's that who detective/spy element to the story as well. I don't normally go much for mystery in my romance, but I DO enjoy action, and this really delivered in a way I enjoyed as being a detective/mystery/action type of deal while still mainly and unrepentantly being a romance.

This is the first book in the series, and you bet your ass I pre-ordered book #2, Schooled. This can be read as a stand-alone, though there are little teaser bits of minor-ish plotline left hanging... Enough to make it so I just HAVE TO KNOW!!

Book Review: Acting on Impulse (Love on Cue #1) by Mia Sosa

Acting on Impulse

Author: Mia Sosa
Series: Love on Cue, Book 1
Publisher: Avon Impulse
Published: October 31, 2017
Paperback, 400 pages

Goodreads  Amazon

Summary: After a very public breakup with a media-hungry politician, fitness trainer Tori Alvarez escapes to Aruba for rest, relaxation, and copious amounts of sex on the beach—the cocktail, that is. She vows to keep her vacation a man-free zone but when a cute guy is seated next to her on the plane, Tori can’t resist a little harmless flirting.

Hollywood heartthrob Carter Stone underwent a dramatic physical transformation for his latest role and it’s clear his stunning seat mate doesn’t recognize the man beneath the shaggy beard and extra lean frame. Now Carter needs help rebuilding his buff physique and Tori is perfect for the job. It doesn’t hurt that she makes his pulse pound in more ways than one.

Sparks are flying, until a pesky paparazzo reveals Carter’s identity. Tori is hurt and pissed. She wants nothing to do with another man in the limelight, but she’s still got to whip him into shape. Can Carter convince Tori he’s worth the threat to her privacy that comes with dating a famous actor, or will Tori chisel him down to nothing before he even gets the chance?

Grab the popcorn…
Rating: 4 stars

Review: This is a sloooooow burn, but so worth it. It's told in a dual first-person present tense POV. I don't normally love the first person present tense, but Mia Sosa makes it work here. I do like that we get both Carter and Tori's POV as well, so we get to know both of them intimately.

I loved Carter. He's so cute and funny, and the way he falls into insta-love with (and declares to the reader he is going to marry) the woman in 12D made me giggle, and I thought it was funny the way he was referring to her as "my wife" until he found out she had a boyfriend (supposedly). Now that is some #instalove I can get behind! It's so refreshing to read a book where the man falls head over heels for the woman and she takes some time to come around, haha.

I also really liked Tori, and her complicated relationship with her family really touched my heart. Her struggles with her need to eat healthfully and care for the health of her family clashes with the type of food they serve at their restaurant and the role food plays in their culture, and I love the way this is resolved. (I won't say more than that for fear of spoilers - you'll just have to read the book!) Tori is so tough and sassy, and I love the first few sessions of her training regimen with Carter. Again, that's all I'll say, but... Zumba. Pfft, hee hee hee. <3

Acting on Impulse is fun and flirty and hot as hell, but it felt like it dragged on a little longer than it needed to. Towards the end I actually started yelling at the book and giving it a frustrated shake or two, because it seemed like obstacles and misunderstandings kept popping up in really unbelievable ways, and both main characters really seemed to be blowing hot and cold and blowing things all out of proportions for no reason. Some of the sex scenes were a little squidgy for me, too, especially some of Carter's dirty talk. It just ventured into a place I find less hot and more ick, which is likely just a matter of taste. The first two-thirds of this book are a solid 5 star rating, but the final third (or maybe just the final quarter) dropped it to a 4 star rating for me.

This is the first book in the series, Pretending He's Mine, came out last month and you'd better believe I immediately went and bought it upon finishing Acting on Impulse. I always feel like how fast I buy other books in the series is a pretty good indicator of how great a book way. :) There is some great lead up in this first book in the series to very subtly set the stage for the second book, but I'm betting each can be read as a stand alone.

Book Review: Mister Hockey (Hellions Angels #1) by Lia Riley

Mister Hockey

Author: Lia Riley
Series: Hellions Angels, Book 1
Publisher: Avon Impulse
Published: August 22, 2017
Paperback, 222 pages
Goodreads  Amazon

Summary: Her biggest fantasy is about to become a reality. . .

Jed West is Mr. Hockey. The captain of the NHL’s latest winning team, the Denver Hellions–and the hottest player on the ice—at least according to every magazine. .and Breezy Angel. Breezy has been drooling over Jed at games for years, and he plays a starring role in her most toe-curling fantasies. But dirty dreams don’t come true, right?

Then Jed saunters through the doors of her library, a last minute special guest for a summer reading event, and not only is he drop dead gorgeous up close, his personality is straight up swoon-worthy. He even comes to the rescue when she has an R-rated “Super Book Worm” costume malfunction. But when he mistakenly assumes she’s more into books than pucks, she’s too flustered to correct his mistake. And then comes a big kiss, followed by a teensy-tiny problem. Jed’s dating policy is simple: Never date a fan.

So what’s a fangirl going to have to do to convince her ultimate crush that he’s become less of a perfect fantasy, and more like the perfect man. . .for her?

Rating: 5 stars
Review: This book is so crazy good. Not only is Jed a super hot hockey star, he's also a genuinely good guy. Swoon. And like a totally swoon-worthy leading man isn't enough, Breezy is fantastic. I laughed out loud so many times because Breezy reminds me SO MUCH of one of my librarian friends (I'm looking at you, Peekaboo). I actually finished this book and then basically chucked it at said friend's head and commanded she read it. "It's basically a book about you!" (Except she has not yet found her hot hockey god.) So check off both boxes, because swoon for the leading man and melt for the leading lady.

The side characters were also amazing. The conflict between Breezy's sister Neve and Jed's coach Tor makes me shake the book and yell "but why do they hate each other so much!?!?!" (Guess I'm going to find out when I read the next book in the series, mwahaha!) The rest of Breezy's family is great too, and I CAN NOT WAIT to read more about her feisty grandma, with her hockey enthusiasm and her "Green Meanie" mixed drinks. My goal in life is to be a grandma just like Breezy's.

My only issue with this book is that I feel like the main conflict (Jed has a policy that he never dates fans) isn't really spelled out or made a big deal of in the book itself. The only reason I knew this was a big uh-oh for our leading couple is because it IS spelled out in the blurb on the back cover of the book. I think this could have been addressed a bit more directly to make it clear that this is a serious source of conflict, which would make the drama that arises later in the book make more sense and seem a less blown all out of proportion. That being said, oh mama, this book is great.

This is the first book in the series, and upon finishing it I immediately went and bought the next two books, Head Coach and Virgin Territory immediately, so you can expect to see reviews for those books coming soon as well.

Blog Tour: Disturbing His Peace by Tessa Bailey (Review, Teaser, Giveaway)

Danika Silva can’t stand Lt. Greer Burns. Her roommate’s older brother may be sexy as hell, but he’s also a cold, unfeeling robot. She just wants to graduate and forget about her scowling superior. But when a dangerous mistake lands Danika on probation—under Greer’s watch—she’s forced to interact with the big, hulking jerk. Call him daily to check in? Done. Ride shotgun in his cruiser every night? Done. Try not to climb into his giant, muscular lap and kiss him? Umm…
Greer doesn’t let anything—or anyone—distract him from the job. Except lately, all he can think about is Danika. He’s wanted the beautiful, cocky recruit since the moment he saw her. But she’s reckless and unpredictable, and Greer is painfully aware of what can happen when an officer doesn’t follow the rules. Probation seemed like a good idea, but now Danika’s scent is in his car and he’s replayed her voicemails twenty times. Christ, he’s a goner.
Danika’s melting Greer’s stone-cold exterior one ride-along at a time. Being together could have serious consequences… but breaking a few rules never hurt anybody, right?

My Review

I don't normally like books written in the first person present tense. In fact, they're usually an automatic DNF for me. I might have to change my mind on that after reading Disturbing His Peace. Told in the first person present tense, this book switches between being told from Danika and Greer's points of view. The first person present tense works really well for the story, because Tessa Bailey does it SO WELL that it's like you're inside each of their heads. Their dirty, filthy, smutty heads. *delicious shiver*

Danika is a first generation American whose parents emigrated from Colombia, and she has a very strong family focus. Greer is basically her polar opposite when it comes to family, having little to no personal relationship with his father and loving his brother but unsure how to actually connect with him. I love how sassy and ballsy Danika is. Who doesn't love a bad-ass lady cop? Especially when she also has a heart of gold and bends over backwards to do everything for her family. Greer is also pretty amazing, and I love how huge and uptight he is. Plus that super tight leash he has on his passion for Danika is super sexy. Rawr!

HOLY HANNAH, the heat in this book. I'm pretty sure my face was flaming while reading several parts. Disturbing His Peace has heavy dom/sub themes, and I really appreciate the way Danika and Greer discover and explore their developing interest in these roles together. Greer always checks that what he's doing is OK with and enjoyable for Danika, for example asking if it's OK before spanking her during foreplay, which depicts a healthy and safe dom/sub relationship and does NOT normalize abuse. *loud round of applause* Hooray for kinky consensual sex play!

This is the third book in The Academy series, and while it can be read as a stand-alone there ARE spoilers for plot points in the first two books. Dani's roommates are the male leads in the first two books, and there are mentions of what I assume are some major plot points from them in Disturbing His Peace. If that's something that's going to ruin it for you if you decide to go back and read the earlier books, then read Disorderly Conduct (The Academy #1) and Indecent Exposure (The Academy #2) before reading Disturbing His Peace.

About Tessa Bailey

Tessa Bailey is originally from Carlsbad, California. The day after high school graduation, she packed her yearbook, ripped jeans, and laptop, and drove cross-country to New York City in under four days. Her most valuable life experiences were learned thereafter while waitressing at K-Dees, a Manhattan pub owned by her uncle. Inside those four walls, she met her husband, best friend, and discovered the magic of classic rock, managing to put herself through Kingsborough Community College and the English program at Pace University at the same time. Several stunted attempts to enter the work force as a journalist followed, but romance writing continued to demand her attention. She now lives in Long Island, New York with her husband and daughter. Although she is severely sleep-deprived, she is incredibly happy to be living her dream of writing about people falling in love.
