Review
First of all, I feel the need to start with a disclaimer that I typically go for romances that are pretty low-angsty, and am more of a rom-com kind of gal than a lover of a good angsty romantic drama. Give me The Proposal over The Notebook any day of the week. That being said, The Scoundrel in Her Bed was a bit higher on the angst scale than I normally care for, which had some effect on my star rating. I still rated it really highly overall (mostly because I totally melt for Finn...) and if angsty romances are your thing you very well might like this more than I did. A large part of my not liking it as much is just a personal preference for a lighter tone to my romances.
The first half of the book starts out with alternating chapters of now and flashbacks to when Finn and Lavinia met, which was a really interesting way to reveal their story and the development of their relationship across BOTH timelines. Every time I started to think Lavinia was behaving rather unreasonably, or that Finn was kind of a jerk, there'd be a flashback chapter that would give deeper insight into their history and suddenly their motivations made more sense and it just made both of them so much more real and fully-formed people rather than just characters to me.
The prologue opens with a women having a baby and that baby being taken from her, and I spent most of the book D-Y-I-N-G to find out if the woman was Lavinia or Finn's mother. Like, dying. It is eventually revealed, but there are some bits of leads thrown out here and there to try to sway the reader to either assumption, so I was kept guessing through most of the book until it was finally revealed. I wanted to shake the book and yell "JUST TELL ME ALREADY, I GOTS TA KNOW!" several times.
Also, I am in love with Finn. And basically his whole family, who are a family of unicorns somehow and turn everything they touch into gold and they all have nobles falling in love with them, so prepare yourself for some mighty suspension of disbelief when it comes to the Trewlove family. (But with a last name like Trewlove you were already preparing for this, yes?) That being said, I'm really looking forward to reading about the rest of Finn's lovely family.
I saw a lot of reviewers that didn't love Lavinia, especially Lavinia in the second half where she is fiercely guarding her heart. Without putting any spoilers in this review, the woman has been through some extremely awful stuff and has managed to pull herself up by the bootstraps and soldier on, saving not only herself but also taking up a cause and saving dozens of children from very likely death... And you don't like her because she won't instantly trust Finn when her own parents are the ones who made her go through the aforementioned suffering? Um.... Okay. My girl has some trust issues. She has some anxiety issues. She is also in pain and grieving and has been very much not only alone but having to live wearing a mask of normalcy for YEARS. Lavinia is a strong-ass bitch and has erected walls around her heart that she built with her own blood and tears as the mortar. Yeah, they're going to take some time and pain to break down. If you can't deal, you don't deserve her. Finn knows this, which is why Finn is my man.
This is the third book in the Sins for all Seasons series, and while it can be read as a stand alone there are definitely spoilers for at least one earlier book in the series.
