How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?
Three, I think.
What does literary success look like to you?
Making a satisfactory living at writing. Right now I have a day-job in addition to writing (although I was recently laid off, so I’m looking for something else).
What’s the best way to market your books?
Let readers see my wit and character.
What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?
Not much, I research as I go. I double-check etymology and look into specific events related to the year in which I am writing.
Do you view writing as a kind of spiritual practice?
God, no.
What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?
I don’t find writing opposite sex characters anymore difficult than writing same sex ones.
How long were you a part-time writer before you became a full-time one?
I don’t know that I’m a full-time writer now! I write when I can, and I have done that for about 15 years.
How many hours a day do you write?
I probably average two hours a day.
What period of your life do you find you write about most often? (child, teenager, young adult)
Young adult. Being old is boring.
What did you edit out of this book?
My heroine being COMPLETELY overbearing. Now she’s only partially overbearing.
Have you read anything that made you think differently about fiction?
Stephen King’s On Writing.
What are the ethics of writing about historical figures?
That’s a good question. I think it’s important to be reflective of that character’s time, and not soften reality.
How do you select the names of your characters?
I usually name them after the actor I envision them as looking like.
If you didn’t write, what would you do for work?
Hm. Since I’m currently looking for work, I’d say I would do community management. Boring answer. But true.
Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with bad or good ones?
I do read them—I find that there are kernels of truth about my writing I can learn from both bad and good reviews, and I try to keep that perspective in mind. Plus reviews are not for the author, but for the readers, so any review is a help.
Do you hide any secrets in your books that only a few people will find?
I often put my critique partner’s last name (Robens) into my books.
What was your hardest scene to write?
Probably the one where the heroine thinks everything is lost.
Do you Google yourself?
Sure!
What one thing would you give up to become a better writer?
Anxiety? Oh, a good thing. Hm. I can’t think of anything. I think being a better writer is only possible with practice.
What are your favorite literary journals?
I don’t have any.
What is your favorite childhood book?
The Colored Fairy Books by Andrew Lang.
What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?
Plot!
Does your family support your career as a writer?
Yes, absolutely.
If you had to do something differently as a child or teenager to become a better writer as an adult, what would you do?
Write more often as a child or teenager. I did a ton of reading, but not any writing.
How long on average does it take you to write a book?
Six months.
Do you believe in writer’s block?
Yes.
