Book Blitz - The Wrong Highlander by Lynsay Sands (Excerpt, Teaser)

A laird’s daughter kidnaps a Highlander—and loses her heart… in New York Times bestselling author Lynsay Sands’ new historical romance
Lady Evina Maclean has heard much about Rory Buchanan’s skill as a healer. What she hasn’t heard is how good the brawny Highlander looks bathing in a waterfall. But Evina can’t afford the distraction, for her ailing father urgently needs care. Only when she’s rendered Buchanan unconscious and dragged him back to her family’s castle does the truth emerge—it’s not Rory she’s kidnapped but his brother Conran.
Other ladies try to ensnare Conran with flattery. Evina hits him over the head with the hilt of her sword to save her kin—and Conran likes the spirited redhead all the more for it. He’s learned enough from his brother to heal Evina’s father, but there are other dangers swirling around the Maclean clan. And while the beautiful, independent lady has sworn not to marry, this wrong Highlander may be just the right man for her.

After a standoff in the pizza parlor, Elsie Bennet has decided Fitzwilliam “I-Throw-Fitz” Darcy is the worst customer she’s ever encountered. Also the best looking, but that’s beside the point. She’s horrified to discover Will is not just passing through her small town, he’s her new neighbor.

Will might control a lot of things, but he won’t control her. Elsie’s already been warned away by her new friend, Jeff Wickham, who found out the hard way that Will is not someone to be crossed. Things would be so much simpler if she was attracted to Jeff. But she’s not. She’s attracted to Will, and the tug-o-war between her mind and her heart is going to drive her mad.

A modern day take on Pride and Prejudice with all the characters you know and love."

Summary
He's too hot for words.

Mia

Alex Lawson might as well be the hottest book boyfriend imaginable. A fun, romantic, possessive, panty-melting man. And the best part?

He’s real.

For a girl like me—a slightly awkward book addict—Alex is a dream come true, straight off the pages of my favorite romance novels. But our story is turning into a whirlwind romance—the kind that only exists in books.

And I wonder if we’re heading toward our own happily ever after, or if he’s too good to be true.

Alex
Here’s the thing. I’m not a bad guy. Lying to Mia wasn’t part of the plan. Finding success as a romance author using a female pen name wasn’t part of the plan either. But sometimes life takes unexpected turns. Like realizing the woman you’re falling for is your alter-ego’s online best friend.
Online, she thinks I’m a woman named Lexi. In person, she knows I’m all man. I want to worship her body and claim every inch of her.

But if she finds out the truth, I could lose everything.

Project: Re-Shelf Yourself - Another One Bites The Dust

Da-da dunn dunn dunn - Another one bites the dust! *Michael Jackson dance moves* Okay, let's be real - I don't have any Michael J. moves. Just way too many books. Which brings me to today's topic - how do you decide what books to get rid of?

I was actually going to write about this last week, but then my Twitter and Instagram were EXPLODING (no, not literally) with people being outraged over Marie Kondo and her apparent advice that you should only have 30 books. I don't watch her show and I haven't read her book, so I know nothing, Jon Snow.

I am, however, planning to weed out a mighty number of books as part of this big Re-Shelf Yourself project, and what I want to know from you is - how do you decide what books to get rid of? How do you decide what to keep?

I have several hundred unread books, and I know I'm trying to be realistic about which ones I *truly* want to read, and let some others (gifts, sale finds, books I won in giveaways...) go.

Then there are some that I read halfway and put down and just never picked up again (The Rook by Daniel O'Malley , The Fireman by Joe Hill, Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones) and at this point I'm like - I made it halfway through this big fat book, but I don't remember any of it. Do I pick up where I left off and just fake it til I make it? Do I give it up as lost? (And then what? Mark it DNF on Goodreads? Read? Unread?) Do I start over from the beginning? (HORRORS!)

Then there are the several hundred more books that I'm pretty sure I've read... I'm sure there are some unread ones mixed in there too, maybe? These are books I've owned since the time BG (Before Goodreads) and my brain is fried from drinking too much Diet Coke, so I look at these books and it's like
But a lot of these are sci-fi/fantasy novels, which I know I like to reread and/or loan out, so I'll likely keep these (because my husband likes to raid this stash too, and my brother borrows from it, and I can see my sons wanting to read these in another 10 years, as well as me wanting to go back to them if I ever have that ever-elusive "free time"). Romances I am usually one-and-done (unless they're super phenomenal, like Sally Thorne's The Hating Game, which I've read twice and am about ready for another re-read of, and some other authors that I love to go back to again and again) but SFF I like to go back to. So while I am likely to weed out a lot of my read romances, I'll likely hang on to a lot of my SFF. Which makes sense, since a LOT of my unread stuff is romances... I just don't have the space to hang onto all my read romances, at the rate I go through them! But I digress.

Drop me your thoughts in the comments - how do you decide what stays and what goes in your personal library? And what do you do with your books when their time with you is at an end?

Exclusive Excerpt
NOTE: This is an unedited excerpt and is subject to change.

I’m startled out of my thoughts when my brother jumps up and shouts a
bunch of profane nonsense, hands flailing like he’s trying to swim on land, or
approximate the chicken dance while on an LSD trip.
“You can’t do this! It’s absolute bullshit!” Armstrong yells.
I look around the table, trying to piece together what I missed.
“I’m sorry, Armstrong. I know this is a shock, but we feel it’s in the company’s
best interest to put Lincoln at the helm during this transitional stage,” G-mom says
firmly.
At the helm? I look to G-mom who’s busy not looking at me.
Armstrong jabs at finger at himself. “But I’m the one who’s put in all the time
here! I deserve to run the company! Lincoln doesn’t know the first thing about
Moorehead. All he knows how to do is dig wells and forage for food in the
wilderness. How are those valuable assets here?” He turns his attention to our
mother. “Did you know about this? How can you let this happen? Look at him. How
can that be the face of our company? He looks like he crawled out of a gutter and
mugged a twenty-year-old college kid on a bender. How is this better for our bottom
line?”
My mother clasps her hands in front of her. “I’m sorry, Armstrong, but this
decision wasn’t mine to make. I know this is hard for you, but your grandmother
and fath—”

Armstrong stomps his foot, exactly as a toddler would. “The company is
mine! Lincoln can’t have it!”
I raise a hand, half to quiet my brother and also to find out what the freaking
deal is. “Whoa, let’s back this bus up. Can someone explain what’s going on?”
“You’ve been appointed as the CEO of Moorehead Media, according to the
will,” Christophe—no R, because that would make it far too pedestrian a name—my
father’s lawyer says.
I’m working on trying to remain calm as I address my grandmother. “You
didn’t say anything about me being CEO. You said you needed my help.”
“Running the company, yes,” she says through a practiced, stiff smile.
It’s her warning face, but seriously, when she said she needed my help for a
few months I figured it meant I’d be keeping Armstrong in line while she sorted out
who was going to take over the company, which I realize now was a stupid
assumption.
“I didn’t think that meant CEO. How am I going to run a company with this
dickhead on staff?” I motion to my brother.
“The name calling is unnecessary,” G-mom replies.
“Lincoln’s not even part of this family! He hasn’t attended one event in the
past five years except for Dad’s funeral. He didn’t bother coming to my wedding and
now he’s going to run the company? How is that fair?”
I snort. “Your wedding was an expensive joke.”
He crosses his arms over his chest. “I was set up. Amalie had cold feet and
made me out to look like the bad guy.”

The woman beside him shoots him disgusted look.
Armstrong clears his throat and tugs at his collar. “My wedding is not the real
issue. The point is that you’ve never involved yourself in any part of this family and
now you think you can come in and take over. I will not stand by and let this
happen!” He keeps jabbing his finger at me, as if he’s engaged in a finger sword fight.
I lean back in my chair and lace my fingers behind my neck. Armstrong has
always been reactive. And self-absorbed. For a while it seemed like he finally had it
together—back when he was engaged. But ever since that fiasco of a wedding he
seems to have come completely unglued. Again. But worse this time. “Someone
needs a timeout.”

Summary
The first novel in a new western historical romance series that will take readers for the ride of their lives on the Oregon Trail.

Alexandra Barratt has found the perfect man—it's a shame he thinks she's a boy...

Fleeing from the murderous Grady brothers, Alexandra disguises herself as a boy and joins a frontier party heading West, with her brother and sister in tow. The wagon train is captained by the irresistible Luke Slater, who's never met a woman he couldn't charm.

At first, Alex can't believe the way every woman in town falls at Luke's feet, including her suddenly flirtatious sister. But when she sees him naked in the bathtub, she finds herself swooning over him too. If only she could wash the muck of her face and show him who she really is. Unfortunately she has more pressing concerns...

The Gradys aren't about to let Alex, nor the small fortune she stole from them, slip through their fingers. Only by maintaining her ruse does she have a chance of protecting her family. But fate, it seems, is conspiring against her.

Discussion #24in48 Readathon

I was originally going to do another installment of Project: Re-Shelf Yourself today about how to decide which books to weed out, but with all the stuff about Marie Kondo's methods on Twitter and Instagram and in the blogosphere this past week or so I just couldn't stomach it. Maybe next week. INSTEAD, today I'm going to gush about how excited I am for the #24in48 Readathon next weekend!

"What's the #24in48 Readathon?" you ask! WELL!
#24in48 Readathon is a readathon the takes place over two days, and in that two day span you try to read for 24 hours (thus, #24in48). This year it takes place on January 26-27, 2019, and I'm going up to my best bookish bud Ariel (aka Peekaboo)'s house to spend a glorious weekend reading with her and our pal Annie. (These are also the amazing women I'm going to KissCon with in April!) I'm extra excited to do #24in48 because I'm going to be missing the spring session of Dewey's 24-Hour Readathon this year because it will fall on that same Saturday as KissCon. :/

I'm still trying to decide exactly how I'll track my hours for #24in48. On their page one of the ways they suggest is using the stopwatch on your phone, and that seems like a great idea! That way when I need to take a break I can just hit stop and them resume. I'm a little scared I'll accidentally hit reset though! Ari and I also have MEGA BIG PLANS to hit up the YMCA in her neighborhood for WATER YOGA on Saturday morning (that is apparently a thing!!) and also a water dance fitness class called "WAVE" on Sunday morning. It should be tons of fun! I'm heading up to her place on Friday night so we can cozy in - and get some meal-prep done so we don't need to take time away from reading to cook all weekend!

Here's my #24in48 TBR!

Do you participate in any readathons? What are your faves? Are you planning to do #24in48? If so, are you planning to track your hours (and how??)

Project: Re-shelf Yourself - Let's get organized

I am sloooowly making progress towards making sense of my home library. (You can read my initial post about Project: Re-shelf Yourself and see my hideous before photos here.) Right now I'm working on putting all of my whoozits and whatzits into totes and boxes so they're out of the way, and I've got friends coming on February 9th to help me pull all the books off the shelves, weed them, and put them back in their forever homes.

Before that can happen, though, I need to decide how I'm going to organize my books!

Color
I see a lot of beautiful photos of people's shelves organized by color, and while this is so visually stunning I'm left wondering - how the heck do you FIND anything? Maybe this works better for people who don't own upwards of a thousand books? o.O I kind of tried to do this with my TBR shelves and I still struggled with some of them because the spines weren't all one color (especially some historical romance titles with a sort of ombré effect).

Size
This is another aesthetic one, where you line them up by size... Again, I think this might work better for a much smaller collection than mine. I just envision the cases and cases of mass market paperbacks that are all the same size, and then what? WHERE IS THE ORGANIZATION IN THAT, I ASK YOU?!

Title or Author
In doing some Googling on ways to organize your bookshelf, I'm seeing a lot of suggestions to just straight sort by title or sort by author, with no regard to genre. This seems SO WEIRD TO ME. I absolutely plan to sort my fiction by author, once I figure out how I'm going to divide up my collection on a larger scale. I can't imagine sorting all 1,000+ books by author with no regard for fiction vs. non-fiction and etc.

Genre
Yes, it may be old school, but this is the one I'm going to go for. There are still a lot of decisions to be make - like WHICH genres and subjects to group together vs. sort out. I may need to do a whole blog post about romance novels and its sub-genres...

Read/Unread
I'm not sure if I'm going to do this or not... I'm super torn about it, so if anyone has any pros/cons for me, that would be super. Part of my issue is that a good 500+ of my books are unread, and some of them I've had since long before I was on Goodreads so their read/unread status is a little fuzzy. (I have a *TERRIBLE* memory, my husband says it's from all that Diet Coke I used to drink.) So fully half of my sci-fi fantasy collection I'd be like "???" for the read/unread status. Meanwhile I have 411 books I've either been gifted or bought or pulled from my existing shelves as things I wanted to read in the ever-nebulous "soon" which I would kind of like to keep separate on an Unread shelf. But then do I also separate this unread shelf (or bookcase... or 2 bookcases... Maybe 3?) by genre as well? Because if I pull ALL of my unread books, it's going to end up being half of my collection. Do I want two collections? And do I have room to allow space in my read collection for, say, 1/3 of the read books to be shelved back in assuming I'll want to keep them after I've read them? I know sci-fi/fantasy I tend to hang on to because I'm more likely to reread or want to loan it out, while romance I rarely go back for a reread (unless it's phenomenal - I DO have a few I keep and hoard!) so I'm more likely to let them go when I'm done reading them. The verdict is still out for my on Read/Unread.

Fiction vs. Nonfiction
This one I know I'm doing, haha. I do need to decide how I'll organize within my non-fiction. Maybe I can get my librarian friends to help me... Ooh! I could look up every nonfiction book I own and find the Dewey decimal for it, get a label maker, and file them that way. *fanatic gleam flares in the eyes* AT LAST, my dreams of being a library come truuuuue!

How do you organize your books? Do you go for a method that's geared toward being more aesthetically pleasing, or toward being able to find things easily? Do you use one of these, some combo of them, or something else entirely?

Summary
What happens when an overachieving psychologist with OCD tendencies and an impulsive, out-of-work actress start a fake relationship?

Claire Renshaw thought she had it all: a successful career as a couples therapist, a publishing contract for her self-help book, and a happy relationship. But her perfect world falls apart when her fiancée calls off their engagement. Because of that, even her book deal might be off the table. After all, readers don’t want relationship advice from someone who can’t even make her own relationship work.

So Claire sets out to hire herself a fake fiancée.

Lana Henderson, the actress who shows up to audition for the role, is not exactly Claire’s ideal woman. Her frankness and the messes she leaves everywhere drive Claire up the wall. At least she won’t fall in love with someone like Lana.

But soon, Lana starts to win her over with her big heart, tickle fights, and—gasp!—carbs after six. The longer they pretend to be a love-struck couple, the less fake their kisses feel and the more the lines between reality and role begin to blur.

Once the book contract is signed, will they walk away or is their relationship no longer just for show?

A lesbian romance where role-playing has never been so irresistible.

Charley is a cleaner by day and a professional gambler by night. She might be haunted by her tragic past but she's never thought of herself as anything or anyone special. Until, that is, things start to go terribly wrong all across the city of Manchester. Between plagues of rats, firestorms and the gleaming blue eyes of a sexy Scottish werewolf, she might just have landed herself in the middle of a magical apocalypse. She might also be the only person who has the ability to bring order to an utterly chaotic new world.

This is the first book in The City Of Magic series.
