Blog Tour: A Princess in Theory by Alyssa Cole (Teaser, Review)

The Duke’s five daughters have beauty, breeding, and impeccable reputations.
Or at least, they did.
Now that two have chosen to follow their hearts, can the others be far behind…?
Lady Olivia refuses to repeat her siblings’ scandalous mistakes. Instead, she will marry the lord rejected by her sister and help with his good works. When he resists, Olivia forms another plan: win his lordship’s admiration by helping his illegitimate best friend find a bride. How difficult can it be to transform the rakish Edward Wolcott into a gentleman? To ignore his virile good looks? To not kiss him in a moment of impulsive madness? Apparently, very difficult indeed.
Edward Wolcott promised his ailing father he would marry well. It’s a challenging task, but Lady Olivia will not be deterred. The sparkling firebrand intends to smooth his way through London’s ballrooms and parlors, while all Edward’s thoughts suddenly revolve around bedrooms…and Lady Olivia herself. Only a scoundrel would seduce the duke’s most dutiful daughter. And only a truly reckless lady would risk everything to be in his arms…

My Review

I love the premise of this book! As someone who recently got a scam email trying to get money from me (disguising itself as a legitimate request to order books from my Usborne Books consultant website, the jerks!) I totally understood Ledi and her annoyance at the repeated emails assuring her that she is betrothed to a prince and she just needs to send her driver's license # and SSN to confirm her identity… Yeah right, NO WAY!

Naledi is a great character - smart and tough as nails, she thinks of herself as "defective Velcro" because people just don't stick around in her life. I'm really interested in epidemiology (in books, not actually in epidemiology itself… just to clarify…) so it was cool reading about the work she does in the field, as well as reading about a main character who is a double minority (black and a woman, oh my!) in STEM. Women in the sciences really intrigue me (maybe because I am so NOT scientifically or mathematically minded!) and I love Ledi's determination.

Thabiso is also a really great character, because he is so wise in the ways of the world but at the same time so very innocent and naïve. He reminded me a little bit of Tamaki in Ouran High School Host Club, who is so rich that he is amused by things like instant coffee, which is how the commoners drink their coffee. Thabiso wouldn't think twice about traveling by private jet, but the subway is an adventure for him. I also really appreciate the personal growth that he goes through as he learns that being a prince does not, in fact, guarantee him everything he wants - especially the most important things.

There's also a good amount of intrigue and a bad guy, though I was kept guessing a little bit as I couldn't decide if the bad guy was one character or another (though I did figure out the vehicle for the badness… Wow, it's hard writing about this with no spoilers!) Anyway, this is basically two great stories in one - Thabiso getting to know Ledi under his guise of the commoner "Jamal," and then solving the mystery of the Prince's plague that's, well, plaguing Thabiso's country.

  1. I was super excited about this book solely because the cover is so gorgeous. The plot isn't my usual catnip, but I'll probably give it a go just because it's getting such fabulous reviews.

    1. It was great! Is this the one that you were more excited about the second in the series? Or was that My Once and Future Duke?
